🌿 Growing & Care Guide

Garlic Chives are a versatile, hardy perennial herb with flat, grass-like leaves and a mild garlicky flavour. Perfect for stir-fries, salads, and garnishes, they’re also loved by pollinators and thrive in pots, raised beds, and sustainable herb gardens.

🌿 Quick Facts

  • Botanical Name: Allium tuberosum

  • Type: Perennial herb

  • Sunlight: Full sun to partial shade

  • Height: 12–18 inches (30–45 cm)

  • Spacing: 6–8 inches apart

  • Germination Time: 10–14 days

  • Harvest Time: 60–80 days from sowing

🌞 How to Grow

  1. Start Indoors: 6–8 weeks before last frost, or sow outdoors in spring or autumn.

  2. Sow ¼ inch deep in moist compost.

  3. Warmth & Patience: Germinate at 15–20°C. Garlic chives grow steadily and return every year.

  4. Transplant when seedlings are 3 inches tall, into well-drained, fertile soil.

💧 Care Tips

  • Watering: Water consistently, especially in dry spells.

  • Feeding: Add compost or organic fertiliser in spring and midsummer.

  • Cutting Back: Trim leaves regularly to keep new growth fresh and tender.

  • Container Friendly: Grows well in deep pots with good drainage.

🌼 Growing Sustainably

  • Pollinator Friendly: Late-summer white flowers are a rich nectar source for bees and butterflies.

  • Cold Hardy: Survives UK winters and regrows every spring.

  • Low Waste: Edible leaves, stems, buds, and flowers — nothing goes to waste.

✂️ Harvesting

  • Begin harvesting once leaves reach 6 inches tall.

  • Cut leaves near the base — never more than one-third of the plant at a time.

  • Best flavour is just before flowering.

Tip: The edible flowers are delicious in salads or as a garnish!

❄️ Overwintering

  • In-ground plants go dormant in winter but return reliably.

  • In pots, mulch lightly or bring into a sheltered spot for winter.
