🌿 Growing & Care Guide

Leaf Celery (also known as cutting celery) is a flavourful, easy-to-grow alternative to traditional celery. Its leafy, aromatic stalks pack a punch in soups, stews, and salads — making it ideal for eco-conscious kitchens, small gardens, and continuous harvests.

🌿 Quick Facts

  • Botanical Name: Apium graveolens var. secalinum

  • Type: Biennial (grown as an annual)

  • Sunlight: Full sun to partial shade

  • Height: 12–18 inches (30–45 cm)

  • Spacing: 6–8 inches apart

  • Germination Time: 14–21 days

  • Harvest Time: 60–80 days from sowing

🌞 How to Grow

  1. Start Indoors 8–10 weeks before last frost or direct sow outdoors when soil warms.

  2. Sow Lightly: Surface sow or sow just under the soil — light aids germination.

  3. Keep Warm: Maintain 16–21°C for best germination.

  4. Transplant when plants are strong, into well-drained, fertile soil.

💧 Care Tips

  • Watering: Keep soil consistently moist — celery doesn’t like drying out.

  • Feeding: Apply compost or organic fertiliser monthly to support lush growth.

  • Mulch: Helps retain moisture and suppress weeds.

  • Container Friendly: Ideal for pots or small space growing.

🌼 Growing Sustainably

  • Pollinator Friendly: Flowering celery (in year 2) supports hoverflies and beneficial insects.

  • Space-Efficient: Yields many harvests from a small patch.

  • Edible Leaves & Stems: No waste — everything above ground is useful!

✂️ Harvesting

  • Begin snipping outer leaves once plants are 6–8 inches tall.

  • Harvest regularly to encourage fresh growth.

  • Great for cut-and-come-again harvesting throughout the season.

Tip: Best harvested in the cool of morning for crisp, aromatic flavour.

❄️ Overwintering

  • Hardy to light frosts — mulch around base in autumn.

  • For winter use, grow in pots and bring into a sheltered spot or cold frame.

🌿 Big Flavour in Small Spaces

At Urban Harvests Co, Leaf Celery is a humble herofragrant, nutrient-rich, and ideal for zero-waste growing. A brilliant addition to any sustainable herb garden. 🌱💚
