🌿 Growing & Care Guide

Rosemary is a classic Mediterranean herb loved for its woody fragrance, evergreen presence, and culinary versatility. Beautiful, tough, and bee-friendly, it’s perfect for home gardens, school growing spaces, and community plots aiming for year-round greenery and sustainable harvests.

🌿 Quick Facts

  • Botanical Name: Rosmarinus officinalis (now Salvia rosmarinus)

  • Type: Perennial evergreen shrub

  • Sunlight: Full sun (6–8+ hours daily)

  • Height: 24–48 inches (60–120 cm)

  • Spacing: 18–24 inches apart

  • Germination Time: 14–28 days

  • Harvest Time: 85–100 days from sowing (faster from cuttings)

🌞 How to Grow

  1. Start Indoors 10–12 weeks before last frost.

  2. Surface Sow: Press seeds gently into moist compost — they need light to germinate.

  3. Warmth & Light: Maintain 21–24°C (70–75°F) with good sunlight or grow light.

  4. Transplant Carefully: Once large enough, move into larger pots or well-drained garden soil.

Note: Rosemary is slow to germinate. Cuttings from an established plant can be faster.

💧 Care Tips

  • Watering: Let soil dry slightly between waterings. Rosemary dislikes soggy roots.

  • Feeding: Needs little feeding — compost in spring is enough.

  • Pruning: Trim after flowering to shape and encourage growth.

  • Containers: Great in pots — ensure excellent drainage and terracotta if possible.

🌼 Growing Sustainably

  • Pollinator Magnet: Rosemary’s pale blue flowers feed bees in early spring.

  • Drought Tolerant: Once established, it thrives with minimal water.

  • Low Input: Requires little attention or resources — ideal for sustainable gardens.

✂️ Harvesting

  • Cut sprigs as needed once the plant is established.

  • Harvest in the morning for highest essential oil content.

  • Avoid cutting more than 1/3 of the plant at a time.

Tip: Regular light harvesting keeps the plant compact and productive.

❄️ Overwintering

  • Rosemary is hardy in most of the UK, but dislikes wet winter soil.

  • Mulch base lightly in-ground or bring pots to a sheltered location.

  • In cold areas, overwinter indoors near a bright window.
